I would probably run out of things to say about it I couldn't think of enough detail but because this is a poem that I can kind of relate with it would be a little bit easier to respond to.
Thesis: Through the use of tone and point of view the authors, Samuel Johnson, and A.E. Housman give advice on adulthood and becoming and adult through their own experiences.
I would first give a general summery and talk about how they are the same and then continue on to talking about point of view and how its third person then first person . I would then discuss tone as far has the authors point of view.

Homework#10 Thursday "Don't Read with Your Eyes"
In
the section "Don't Read with Your Eyes" Foster is suggesting that to
fully understand the text you have to put yourself in the characters position
especially if it is set during a different time period or setting such as a war
zone in Iraq. An example would be the book "Kite Runner" in the book
when the Taliban arrive later in the book the characters are happy and are even
taking pictures with them because they had stopped fighting in their town and
was just happy it was peaceful and that a child could play outside without
getting a limb blown off. This could throw the reader off and cause them to
take the main character(s) as the protagonist instead of the good guy because
of prior historical knowledge. This could also be because of bias and prior
context as well as the fact that the reader doesn’t find out until later that
the Taliban were actually bad guys and took over the town killing the main
characters best friend.
Homework#10 Wednesday "It's never just illness"
1. The Fault in our stars- The main character is dying of cancer and is severely depressed until she starts going to group therapy where she meets the guy of her dreams. The heart is significant because although she doesn't have much time left she find true love.
2.Outbreak- this film is about a outbreak of a dangerous virus like ebola in a small town in the US brought to the US by an infected monkey. This has to deal with the heart because one of the scientists in the movie who is the boyfriend of anohter scientist that is dealing with the virus tears a hole in their bio hazard suit and gets sick.
3.Resident Evil- (Of course I had to put this one in there) This is the classic apocalyptic movie about zombies and twisted government secrets. They just went all out on these. But in summary for the first one everyone is not a zombie well everyone in Raccoon city is not ,...yet. An experiment A.K,A zombie potion went wrong in "the hive", a special underground research facility under "project Alice's" mansion and a team is sent to investigate so they just gas her and when she wakes up they are there and has bad amnesia. The heart is involved because she starts to remember things about her life as they go into the hive and remembers her husband and how he is actually not. SPOILER ALERT: he is actually a bad guy and they watch joyfully as he gets eaten.
4.Technically a vampire movie could be counted as an illness movie at its roots a vampire hunter movie is like what is actually going on when your body is fighting an infection. Blade- so Blade is a vampire vampire hunter he uses a garlic injection to suppress the thirst he hunts vampires after they killed his mother and he can walk in the sunlight. So he has a soft spot for humans and he brings one home even though she has been bitten in a hospital, mainly because she is a doctor and could possibly come up with a cure for vampirism.
5. Black Lung HeartAche ,Joe BonaMassa-This is a song about a family in the mountains that if the father does not work in the coal mines his family will starve so he has to make the choice to go to work and slowly die or save his family. This is all about the heart what is in the fathers heart to do the right thing.
6. Gonna Miss you When You're Gone, Patty Griffin This song is about the passing of her father. It applies to the heart because of the grieving.
7.Anti-D, The Wombats this song is about the leas singer who suffered from severe depression and was given anti depressants that hindered him more than it helped. The heart is involved because even though he is taking anti-depressants they are hindering him and he is still sad.
8.Bad Case of Loving You, Robert Palmer- This song is about how Robert Palmer, although it is initially about love he got hooked on drugs.
9.A Little Bit Longer, Nick Jonas- This is a song about his struggle with diabetes and how it makes him irritable. It hurts his heart that sometimes he can't control his emotions.
10. Brompton Cocktail, Avenge Sevefold, This songs author died of an enlarged heart do to eye surgery medication a few days after he wrote this song.

Homework#10 Monday "He's Blind for a reason"
In
the book "Kite Runner" By; Kahaled Hosseini the main character’s
father is the one that is "blind" for about half of the book. He is
concerned with his personal gain and can't understand his son because he is not
a "manly man". He is always aggravating Amir about not fighting back,
and when Amir's best friend gets raped Amir doesn't tell anyone especially his
father because he is afraid he will disown him. Amir’s father is also
never there as well as the fact that he is hiding demons that are haunting him constantly
as the boys grow apart after the incident. When they escape to the United
States Amir’s father is also not cultural and doesn’t realize that most of the
people from Russia or other that have
come to the US like his doctor are not soldiers or spies trying to steal government
secrets or hurt them.

Homework#9 Thursday Its all political
In "The
Jungle" Upton Sinclair tells a story about a family who
comes to the US not knowing what they are getting themselves into. That it is a
literal Jungle of political corruption. He is also experiencing this in his own
life and since you just can't straight call out major players in politics even if you aren't a MILQUETOAST you can write a book about what their doing and their corruptness. These INCREDULOUS atrocities
were going on in Sinclair's life so he wrote about them and all of the
political corruptness in his life. This was a time when people
everywhere needed money and could be bribed very easily. This also was the reason
that the food industry was suffering from the “mean green”. Companies that seemed MUNDANE were cutting corners
to make an extra dollar and the fact that the food at the time was not
regulated. In theory it was but legislators were bribed so they looked the
other way and companies got away with anything.

Homework#9 Wednesday And Rarely just Ilness
In "The Jungle" the main character Jorgis knows that his job poses hazards of every kind of extreme due to the careless and unregulated CANONS company like most companies during the industrial revolution in america. When one of the cattle were not fully stunned and was sent to be killed it took off running around the foggy CACOPHIC plant. Jorgis managed to dodge the men and mass of chaotic knives as well as the foreman who was shooting blindly with a rifle through the smog trying to put the animal down only to step wrongly and break his ankle. Although this was a rather MUNDANE injury compared to everthing that could have happened to him that day itcosted him dearly because he would be laid up for months. And what he feared most would have to happen that his wife would have to support the family all while he laid in bed and sulked about. His illness could be a symbol for the job market of the time in the book and how easily the family had taken the bait into the financial traps that they would have to live with. Because as easy as it was that Jorgis got the injury and although it could have been worse the pain was excruciating and it laid him up for weeks with no pay.

Homework#9 Tuesday Nice to eat with you communion
In Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"
The evening meal for the family is the only time that the family gets to
be together because it is the small fraction of time when none of the family
are at work. The family bought a house UNWITTINGLY knowing about the interest
they had to pay until later so this put them into a panic. The main character,
Jorgis was LUGUBRIOUS because every member of the family had to work including
his new wife, and oldest child who was not quite sixteen so they had to fake
his age. It was here at their “communion that they could relax and tell the gruesome
stories in what they first thought were HYPERBOLES of the places they worked as
well as learn from one of their fellow Lithuanian neighbor the history of their
house and the ways of Packingtown and the US. The family could enjoy each
other’s company and often this communion would keep the family SANGUINE about
their situation as it continued to worsen.
Homework#9 Monday Every trip is a quest
In
Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" A Lithuanian family , filled with HUBRIS embarks
on a journey to the United States from their comfortable home in the forest
where they hear that they can make more money. However when they arrive they
find that they are losing everything because it was a time in the United States
with no regulation and no boundaries. Where they started out to become
rich it soon becomes a battle just to survive the harsh conditions of Packing
town. They are swindled out of their money by everyone from their own
co-workers to department store salesmen and are filled with TREPADITION and
mistrust. The food is unregulated and with the workers being over worked and
underpaid ,as well as swindling bosses all the way up to the owner of the
company food is extremely toxic and low quality. This was ONEROUS for them because
it was all they could afford and would often make them sick and in an extreme
case kill one of the older family members.

Homework#8 Wed-Thurs
The Kite Runner is an
exciting book that is packed unexpected turns at every corner. This a book
where you may be able to predict the end results but not the price and trials
the characters have to go through to get there. The Author, Khaled Hosseini presented the
novel in both exciting and an easy to read format for this reason I would recommend
this book to almost anyone however it does bring in some harsh realities that
are not appropriate for some ages.
This book is overall
very well written and has more than one overarching theme that is woven
seamlessly into its pages. The first major theme that I noted was the fact that
everything has a price and how in the book Amir noted this time and time again throughout
that what happened to Hassan his half-brother was the price paid for not only
what he did but, what their father did. I also noted that theme seemed to shift
in the book. Although Amir still haggled over price in his mind so to speak he
also brought up something he hadn’t for a while religion. Amir says “Then I
remembered I haven’t prayed in over fifteen years”(Hossieni 345) Although I
didn’t notice this at first Amir seems to be on the path to redemption although
that is what he seeks when he throws pomegranates at Hassan in the beginning he
would not get it until almost twenty years later.
The book also flows
very well and is easy to read because it doesn’t jump around however it still
leaves the reader on edge and using their imagination both throughout the book
and at the end of each chapter. This book keeps you guessing and just when you
expect the characters to be home free some unexpected event takes a turn for
the worst. This book is also very detailed even the gruesome parts so for this
reason I do not recommend this book to the faint of heart. The cursing is
minimal although the “f word” is used in one page however that was expected for
this contemporary literature.
This book is overall a
great book it really makes you think both about the themes and really think
about how lucky you are in your life. It is packed full of mystery and keeps
you wondering through every twist and turn in the book. I would defiantly recommend
this book to anyone than can stomach the details and a little bad language.
1. Do you think Sohrab will ever come around so to speak?
2. Do you think Amir has finally found peace?
3. Do you think Assef got what he deserved?
Homework#8 Tuesday
These chapters about sex are completely opposite the first chapter is about how significant yet everyday objects on a book can be a literal "sex symbol".Whereas in the next chapter it describes how a sex scene in a book is a description of something else such as how the main character really feels. I feel that both chapters were of equal importance because both of these helps us to look beneath the surface of what we are really reading. An example of both of these would be Twilight the book. Although Bella and Edward do eventually getting around to having sex Edward feels he is inadequate and is unable to control himself because of his strength. This could also represent that even though he is fairly comfortable with Bella when they are married he still feels like a monster and that he doesn't deserve her. While Edward is gone Bella develops a relationship with Jacob and he gives her a dream catcher later after Edward comes back and although Edward is friendly about it he can still see ,and it is somewhat implied later that although it doesn't necessarily represent sex Bella is still torn between her love for Edward and her love for Jacob.

Homework#8 Monday
Yes I feel that Foster does have a legitimate argument about sex in literature. Although not as subtle in the Davincii Code Sophie Nevu's father was supposed to meet professor Landon however he was killed and the last thing he did was draw a pinnacle on his chest. The detective that is investigating the case (also thinks the professor is the killer ) thinks that the pinnacle is a sign of devil worship and conjuring spirits. The professor then explains that it is the symbols for the blade and chalice as talked about in Foster's book blade= manhood used in military for ranks and chalice for womanhood=empty cup=The Holy Grail which he figures out later is somewhat untrue. So overall although this was a more modern book it still had the concept of the sexual element which was able to be explained in an scholarly point of view and lead to an adventure.

Homework#7 Wed-Thrus 11
I was greatly surprised
in the book that the author, Kahled Hosseini decided to kill Hassan so early
and still in Afghanistan. However from a story line and movie point of view
this makes since because this is the main stessor in the book and paired with
the main conflict which is Hassan’s son. Amir doesn’t want him and thinks that
Rahim Kahn is trying to push him on him until he figures out that Hassan is his
half brother.
In the scene where Amir
figures out Hassan is dead and that he is his half brother is a key scene and
the main stressor of the main conflict of the story so far. In the book Amir
goes to see Rahim Kahn because ironically
he is dying of the same thing Amir’s father
died of years earlier Cancer. Rahim Kahn tells him about Hassan and his
wife and breaks the news not only that he is dead but that he is Hassan’s half
brother because he says “Ali was sterile…I think you know who”(Hosseini 222) Before
this particular line Rahim Khan was trying to convince Amir to go and get
Hassan’s son out of an orphanage since Hassan had been killed however he
refused.
I feel that when Amir
figures out Hassan is his half brother it brings all of that pinned up emotion
and guilt for not helping Hassan and multiplies it because Hassan is now dead,
he feels like he can never make up for what he did.(Hosseini 222-223) On top of
the fact that he had always treated Hassan as more of a servant than a friend
or a brother. He feels he would treated him differently of they were family and
because his father did not tell him who he was he is dead. Through all of this intense emotion not once
did Amir say anything about Hassan’s son and since Hassan said “And I could
almost feel the emptiness in Soraya’s womb….Like a newborn child.” There may yet be some hope for them adopting
Hassan’s son since he is like Amir in many ways and is now his own flesh and
blood. (Hosseini 211-213)
1. Why didn't Amir take Sohrab?
2. Will he now that he knows Sohrab is family?
3. Why do you think the author brought Hassan's mother back into the picture?

Homework#7 Tuesday
You
could argue that in "X-Men Origins of Wolverine" Logan AKA Wolverine
is the literal sense of Baptized when he is convinced by General Stryker to be
injected with Adomantium ( a fictional indestructible space metal) that will make him invincible. He agrees and is immersed in water during the procedure so that his body temperature doesn't get
too hot. At the end of it he dies for a second but comes back to life and when
he hears Stryker say to a technician to erase his memory he bursts out of the
water in rage and indestructible and escapes. This represents all aspects of
being baptized literally he was immersed in water died then came back to life a
new person.

Homework#7 Monday
In the movie "Chicken Run" if the hens do not produce enough
eggs they get eaten. The farmer later gets tired of trying to sell eggs and
buys a chicken pie machine. The chickens have to escape before they get made
into chicken pies. They keep coming up with plans but the hens can’t fly very
high so they can’t fly over the fence so they fail. One day a circus Rooster falls
into their pen from being shot out of a cannon and tells them he can fly. He
makes a deal with the hens to help them escape if they don’t tell the circus
where he is. Although he can’t fly either he tries to devise a plan to help the
hens fly. This flight ultimately leads to the characters' freedom because they end up building a giant flying chicken and making it
over the wall to green pastures and not having to be worried about being eaten.

Homework#6 Wed-Thurs 2
"A part of me was hoping someone
would wake up and hear, so I wouldn't have to live with this lie anymore."
(86 Hosseini) The author has developed the overall theme of “Does
everything Really have a price?” The main character Amir hears it first from the
worst kid in town Assef, and later from the drugged Russian soldier as Amir and
his father are being smuggled out of Kabul. The character comes to a cross
roads several times in the book so far once where he decides whether to help
his best friend or stand and watch.
1. Why didn't Amir tell Rahim Khan what he had seen of he trusted him so much more than his own father?
2. Why does Ali not tell Amir's father?
3. Why do you think the author keeps reiterating that "everything has a price" besides the overall theme?
The
author sets the stage for this conflict because of the fight that the main
character Amir, and his friend Hassan
almost got into with Assef whom they would later find out is much more corrupt
than they thought, when going to their favorite spot to hang out. Amir
makes the decision to stand and watch and is haunted by it forever. This
creates a feeling of guilt in him and although he wants to tell his father what
happened and that he stood by and watched his best friend be rapped while his
friend defended him over a kite he wants to please his father and knows that
his father would condemn him.(Hosseini 74-76) Amir begins to wonder if this is the price that Hassan has paid for
being his friend. For being shunned and picked on and defiled.
Amir also questions himself after the
incident and his motives for trying to impress his father and at what price
does that come? Amir’s father doesn’t think he is a real man and should be
studying something else besides writing and should have honor, and courage, and
like sports, however Amir prefers to write and read instead of rough house with
the other boys. He questions that in his quest to impress his father at the
kite competition he is more worried about the kite than his friend who could
have been killed by Assef. Ultimately he makes the decision to impress his
father than save his friend.
When Amir and his father were being
smuggled out of the country a drugged Russian soldier wanted to defile a
married woman so Amir’s father stood up to him and Amir really thought it was his
death until he heard a shot and no cry. However he started to question again the
fact that everything has a price. That their freedom would cost his father’s
life and probably that of the young wife’s as well had the commanding officer
not stepped in.
Overall Amir has begun to question everything
since the incident with Hassan, and not doing something will be something he
will never forgive himself for. I think that the the theme “Does everything
really have a price?” Will continue to develop into a more complex theme
throughout the book.
2. Why does Ali not tell Amir's father?
3. Why do you think the author keeps reiterating that "everything has a price" besides the overall theme?
Homework#6 Monday
In the Book The Kite Runner the character Amir is at first shy yet cherry but after the winter of 1975 when he failed to help save his friend form the unspeakable he became bitter, depressed and disdainful because of the fact that he did nothing and it still haunts him to the point he frames his best friend.(Hosseini 76-77) His best friend was Hassan who was humble and loyal even through the event of '75 however he became depressed as well because he finally knew that Amir had watched and yet he made one final sacrifice by taking the blame for Amir's lie that he had stole from them because Hassan knew Amir's father would never forgive him. (Hosseini 80-81)Amir's father is confident, fanciful, and prideful, the exact opposite of Amir in some ways.(Hosseini 14)

Homework#6 Tuesday Mountains as symbols
In the Hobbit and throughout the Lord of the Rings the Misty Mountains can symbolize several things. However the most prominent meaning of the mountains was that it all started with a Dark Lord and essentially a Mountain. Before the Hobbit Sauron got jealous and made his own ring of power to rule the others in Mt.Doom then he goes to conquer. Isildur defeats him and takes the ring but it corrupts him so he keeps it until he is killed by a raid. He drops it in the river and Golum's friend finds it. It corrupts Golum and he goes to the misty mountains where it is later picked up by a young Bilbo who fell ( literally off a cliff) in the goblin caves (in a certain part of the misty Mts.) when he is on a quest to help the dwarves get rid of a greedy dragon out of their home (which is a Mountain). After all of this he came back home until he decided he was leaving to live with the elves and Frodo found it who now the Dark Lord is after because Gollum told them where to find him. So he had to go on a journey to destory it back at Mt. Doom again. So ultimately the mountain is a symbol for the Beginning and the end of both the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.
Another book is "Cold Mountain" the mountain is a symbol of both love and survival. The main characters Ada and Inman are in love and she promises to wait for him on her fathers farm that is going down hill fast because of his death while Inman deserts the confederate army after an "slight" injury to come back to her. Ada has no idea how to do anything because she was spoiled and has nothing put up for winter so she has to try survive through a harsh Appalachian winter with Ruby who learned to survive on her own because her father would leave for months at a time. Inman has to make it back to Cold Montain and survive the winter without being caught by bounty hunters who catch deserters.
In Rambo the Mountains symbolized the advantage that Rambo had against the police officers who were trying to catch him even though he didn't do anything wrong. Although there were many of them and lots of weapons and only one of him he had more experience and training plus the higher ground of the mountain.

Book Review "Poisonwood Bible"
I think that Poisonwood Bible is an 8.5 because it had and excellent way of jumping around from the characters perspectives that was clear and easy to understand, and because of the history and political issues intertwined in the novel. I also liked how most of the characters were varying greatly in age or maturity which made the story alot more interesting to see their perspectives of both their father and the world around them. The Story told from all of the varying characters views are like how the author was using all of the Biblical allusions and she even wrote in one giant one because the Bible had several different authors all telling the same story. I liked the history perspective because it made the novel more realistic and almost historical with the family right in the middle of the congo gaining independence and the US almost in a war that didn't seem to matter where they were. The thing that stood out to me the most was the Biblical allusions the book was just one big Bilblical allusion frrom the characters perspective to their owm allusions

Homework#5 Thursday
Yes and no I do think she has some Christ like features although not really enough to be a Christ like figure in this book. In The Poisionwood Bible the Kilangan people for a time are considered by the Price family to be the bad guys or unholy and below them and Ruth May is the first to make contact by teaching the children how to play "Mother May I?" She is also the most innocent and forgiving and is very literal about things. However she lost the battle with the snake bite and the serpernt is often known as the tempter this would have made more sense as a Christ figure if she would have made a miraculous recovery and died of something else. (Kingsolver 166) However when she died her mother covered her with a shroud made out of mosquito nets. So overall I think there is enough evidence to support either side that she both is and isnt a Christ like figure.
Homework#5 Wednesday
Although this book does seem widely political I think it is not completly about the politics because it gets to a point where the family is just trying to survive because Orleanna made the comment that president Eisenhower and what was going on at home didnt seem to effect the congo or really matter. Politics was just a minor thing that didn't seem to affect them until later when Anatole is protesting and getting put in jail. I do however think that it is raising somewhat of political and religious towards the family because of their father who is very strict and abusive. It may have raised an issue of the authors childhood because strict southern Baptist Preachers are still around today and were very prominent in the 60's to 80's
Homework#5 Tuesday
An example of the first type of literary violence is when Tata Kuvundu the witch doctor put a green mamba snake in the chicken house, and although it was probably intended for Nelson it was put there with malicious intent. His plan worked although it killed the families youngest Ruth-May which was the final straw for the family and this made them pack up and leave all except for Nathan the delusional father. An example of the second type would be the plague of the ants which both divides the family further and sets the stage for the controversy with the tribe over the lack of food. The ants divide the family further because they are already starting to rebel and question each other especially the sisters and when Orleanna leaves Adah and takes Ruth-May this puts more of a stressor on the family. The ants also eat everything in their path which causes a great lack of food in an already sparse land.

Homework#5 Monday
One of the first weather events that I think of oddly enough is fog because almost every knows who Rudolph the read nose Reindeer is. Fog plays a key role in making Rudolph the star of the show if it hadn't been a foggy night Santa wouldn't have recognized Rudolph's potential to use his nose.
Another movie that fog plays a key role is twilight it both sets the scene for an ominous event and keeps the vampires from being noticed because of their glittering skin.
It also sets the scene for battle of one side or the others impending doom. As noted in Pirates of the Caribbean, Horror movies and pretty much any movie with a battle scene not in the desert.
(Note The Ominous Fog)

Homework#4 Wednesday
Cinderella is an allusion to the movie "The Princess Diaries" . In the Movie Mia (Cinderella) is just a regular girl in high school who is bullied by two main cheerleaders (the evil stepsisters) whose father (the wealthy statesman who died) dies. This prompts a visit from her long lost grandmother (the Fairy Godmother ) who tells her she is a princess. She attends princess lessons and is protected and advised by Joe(the Grand Duke) the head of security until she will decide if she will be the Official Princess of Jenovia. (The Grand Ball) In the mean time she falls in love and asks Michael brother of her best friend Lily (Prince Charming) to the ball. Tension soon grows and she is not going to go to the ball. So the night of the ball arrives and Joe(Grand Duke) is sent to find her. This is like trying to find the girl the glass slipper fits on in the kingdom. So Joe finds her and the rest is history.
Poisonwood Bible Response
I feel that fathers should not always be the head of the house hold because some fathers are abusive ,however, for the most part most fathers are loving and good . In Poisonwood Bible Nathan is abusive possibly due to his war injury. He is very controlling and thinks he knows everything almost in a delusional sense. Orleanna and the children are afraid to leave him but when Ruth May dies that is the last straw. When she dies he is in shock like the children and although Orleanna is too she has a little more composure and is able to do a small funeral and and then leave Nathan. Although Nathan is not a good father for head of the house hold there are several unexpected characters in the book that would be considered good heads of the house hold. Tata Ndu the leader of the tribe where the family is staying is an exmple. Although he seems to be making trouble he is just doing what he thinks is best for his people. He also provides food and protection to not only his family but the whole village.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why do you think Orleanna didn't just pack up and leave right after the funeral for Ruth May?
2.Baptism of Ruth May?
3.Do you think Orleanna hoped Ruth May would come back to life ro is in denile (I.E. the shroud)?

Homework#4 Tuesday
You could argue that the whole entire Lord of the Rings series was one giant allusion to the Bible. However one event stands out the most in the entire series that is the most shocking and obvious. The allusion is Jesus' Birth death and Resurrection. Jesus died on the cross and came back to defeat evil by forgiving sins. This is not unlike in Lord of the Rings where Gandalf the Grey a wizard and a key player in the story is killed. But he says "I have been sent back at the turn of the tide" he was resurrected(comes back as Gandalf the White) and helps win the wars to come against the Dark Lord Sauron.

Homework#4 Monday
I have heard of most of these before it was not on a movie but a TV show. On the show "Criminal Minds" it starts with a famous quote etc. and/or ends with it. This particular line "To thine own self be true" was a theme in one of the shows. Usually the poem or the quote gives a hint to what is going to happen and is used as symbolism to the main plot of the story. Sometimes the show will give the same quote at the beginning at the end, and by the end of the story it either has a new meaning or you understand what the quote means.

Homework#3 Thursday even more irony
An example of situational irony is in the movie How to Train Your Dragon. In the movie Hiccup is trying to be like the other vikings when in fact he is braver than all of them.
Another example of situational irony is the main plot of the movie "Trading Places". This movie is about two rich men who run a company that play in the stock market. Their new young executive is carrying a larger amount of money to a meeting where he is accidentally knocked down by a homeless man Mr. Valentine (Eddie Murphy) and the executive, Winthorp(Dan Akroyd) thinks he is being robbed and calls the police while Valentine tries to give his brief case back to him. So skipping ahead the Rich guys or the Dukes make a bet for one dollar that they can make Valentine their executive and make Winthorp homeless. The plan works but Valentine figures out what is going on and that the Dukes had an dirty man (Binks) to get the Crop report so that they would know how play the stocks and make tons of money. On New Years eve Valentine and Winthorp intercepted Binks and gave the Dukes a wrong crop report so their scheme came back on them.
Frozen is an example of situational irony because you expect Kristoff to save Anna when in fact she saves herself because of her love for her sister that she would die for her.

Homework #3 Wednesday..;Oh the Irony
"Time to go" from Pirates of the Caribbean is an example of verbal irony in that it is a understatement made by Will Turner when Gibbs asks him where Jack is and suddenly he runs out of the jungle towards them while in a few seconds a group of hungry cannibals comes running after him. The crew have to make it on the ship and set sail before they get eaten Jack or no Jack.(this is one of my favorite scenes so I added a video of this scene for your entertainment)
In Bourne Identity the quote "sooo.. we got a bump coming up" is an example of dramatic irony again because it is an understatement. Jason Bourne and the woman he originally payed to drive him to Paris Maurie is in Pairs being chased by the police because they are wanted fugitives, Bourne being the product of a failed government experiment. They are in a car chase and are riding in Maurie's old Mini cooper which can fit into small spaces all in all the chase ends up from the streets to the side walks where the eventually come to a huge flight of stairs when Borune says this.
In Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Robin hood played by Kevin Costner and the Mery men have planned a raid on the soldiers of Nottingham that are traveling through Sherwood Forest. It is a large group of soldiers because they are carrying alot of money and one of the men asks Robin how many there are there are more than 20 but Robin says there are only 5 so as not to worry the men and because most of them can't count anyway.
[talking about how many men that are about to be ambushed]
Robin Hood: How many?
Azeem: 20.
Robin Hood: 20?
Bull: [further away] How many?
Robin Hood: 5.
Robin Hood: [to Azeem] He can't count anyway.
Sonnet Response "Ozymandias"
The author, Percy B. Shelly uses dramatic irony in this sonnet because she describes the base of what was a great statue on the middle of the desert with an inscription written by a king to look at all he had accomplished when there was nothing there but the remnants. She uses imagery to describe the secenery of the desert, the vastness and then the remnants of the statue. This could also be a refernce to some parts in the Bible because Jesus says that it is easier for a camel to walk though a needle than those who are great and wealthy the go into the kindom of heaven and that those who are last will be first and those who are first last in the knigdom of heaven. The poem is Petrarchan and shifts at the 8th line and starts with a the quote that is the irony of the whole poem.

Homework #3 Tuesday Irony
In the Incredibles it is dramatic irony when Edna refuses to add a cape to the Incredible' suit although we normally picture them with capes because she says they result in deaths. At the end Syndrome(bad guy) has a cape and is sucked in an airplane turbine because his cape got stuck in it.
Another Pixar movie that has dramatic Irony is finding Nemo when Marlin calls the seahorse Ponyboy and he says that for a clown fish Marin is not that funny. This is ironic because of the name and because someone even thought to name this fish the way they did. This fish the clown fish is of course real and is in a sub category a damsel fish. This is ironic because these fish are naturally territorial although they often hide in their anemone they can be aggressive. (also note a Nemo flaw the females are huge compared to the males they reversed the size but maybe not in the sense of Nemo's mom's personality which is outgoing and his fathers which is more cautious even before Coral's demise.
In Lord of the Rings Gandalf the Grey(note this is significant) was thought dead after he fell off the bridge of Khazzad Dune after fighting the Balrog which caught hold of his leg with his fiery whip and took Gandalf with him.But we know that he wasn't dead because he continued to pursue the creature from "the lowest Dungeon to the highest peak" and on the highest peak of Durin's Tower he fought the creature and died(later) but (spoiler alert) he came back to life as Gandalf the White(see I told you) and was in Fangorn forest where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were looking for Marry and Pippin after they had been taken by Uruh-hai after trying to distract them so Frodo could get away. The Uruk-hai were later killed by the riders of Rohan and in the midst of the battle Marry and Pippin had escaped into the forest and were picked up by Treebeard an Ent who took them to Gandalf who left them with tree beard to keep them out of trouble. And that brings us back to Gandalf who they all though was Saurman(good guy turned bad because both Gandalf (now) and Saurman is known as "The White Wizard" which just made things complicated for everyone except us.(Can't you tell I have really watched this way too many times?)

Homework #3 Monday
In the Poisonwood Bible the use of Bible references has been used to describe the families whole life. The girls were raised in church so to speak so they were well versed and from the book of Genesis and so on their life has correlated to the Bible. Indirectly throughout the whole book was like The Plagues of Exodus or Revelations. An example of this would be the plague of ants, the war going on, the slavery at the rubber plantations Leah talks about later, and the famine when Leah volunteers to go hunting with the men to keep the family alive.

I least know the stories of Hermes, Daedalus, and Penelope the least although I didn't know these I did know the ones they were compared with and made an educated guess. In greek mythology Daedalus was a great an honored architect who designed the labrynith or the cage that held the minotaur captive, however he was held captive in his creation. he knew he could escape with the wax wings he created by his son was foolish and flew too close to the sun god apollo and fell to his death, this is a symbolic story to the dangers of entering "the realm of the gods".Penelope is the faithful wide of Odysseus in the Odyssey who awaits his return while turning down any other possible suitors And Hermes is the greek God of commerce and the guide to the souls of the dead.

Homework #2 "Monsters etc."
Blade is a classic vampire movie with a twist because Blade is a vampire hybrid who hunts vampires and unlike other vampires can walk in the sunlight. His hate for other vampires came from the fact that his human mother was killed by a vampire. he was taken in later by an older vampire hunter who knew he was different. Besides the vampire story this story may also suggest one thing that the foster book did not. All of the vampiric things has to do with sin and one thing this one deals with is both lust and greed. It is like the Bible in that it criticizes the rich because Blade's mother was lower class and most if not all of the vampires featured in the movie were in places of power or rich unless they were the extremely lower level guys who where not actually vampires yet but wanted to be.

gone, gone, gone
Isaiah 28:16Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
In
this song the composer is speaking of a significant other and the line
"You are my cornerstone" suggests that the composer’s significant
other is the most important thing in their life. That they feel like they can't
live without their significant other being there for them and vice versa. The
author could have said life, or strength or any other adjective but this one
word encompasses everything. This also worked better with the song and adding a
lot of descriptive words would have make it long and drawn out more like an old
country song than an upbeat contemporary song.gone, gone, gone
Isaiah 28:16Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
p.s. I did not copy this I put in word to check the word count and it came out looking like this.
Homework #2 Monday "Communion" #2
another significant meal in Posionwood Bible is when it is summer in the congo and there is almost no food left and in a desperate effort to feed the village the men are going to hunt by light fire in a circle and shooting the animals when they jump out in a frenzy. Leah has become bold and argued with her father about going hunting though both were talking calmly because her father said Leah wasnt worth trying to "teach" any more. after the meal she left and didn't come back until after the hunt. This is a point where we find out that Nathan really doesn't care much for his children. And the family is virtually separated although the mom doesn't think so.
"The Red Wheel Barrow" William C. Williams
I feel that this poem is expressing that everything has to be just picture perfect. Because what other "happy color" can you make white stand out with the best ,and when you think of a wheel barrow or a wagon what color is it usually? Blue is calming and not exciting and most other colors are too light or too dark so that leaves you with some color if you go into detail mixed with red. It also goes with the chickens comb compliments its yellow legs. This is the perfect picture with the shinny wheel barrow and white chickens. So overall I think that the author is questioning why so much depends on image and, perfection, and to be like everyone else.

Homework #1 Wednesday
(SPOILER ALERT: do not read if you don't want to know the details of the movie)
When I think of a self-Knowledge movie I think of the first movie in the Jason Bourne Series. (The book is so detailed and different than the movie). Jason Bourne is on a quest to find his identity after being pulled from the ocean with long term amnesia. He is essentially "the knight" since he is a failed black-opps government experiment the "bad guys" is crooked government agents and politicians trying to cover up the incident. The Grail is his Identity, he eventually goes to a bank in Switzerland where he finds passports that have both the names John Michael Kane and Jason Bourne on them so he has to figure out which one is what. The Damsel in distress is Maurie he meets her after the bank incident and pays her 20000 euros to drive him to paris. They go to his apartment and when they get there there is a hit-man with her picture because she used to work as a lower level person on the Black Briar project which is the project that Bourne was Trained through. Bourne Doesn't find what he is looking for but he finds the files on the Black Briar project and exposes the conspiracy and lives happily ever after with Mauire (unexpected and unintended by him) while the politicians turn on eachother.

"Literature is full of patterns, and your reading experience will be much more rewarding when you can step back from the work, even while you're reading it, and look for those patterns." (Foster xiv)
This quote helps me the most because I have problems with taking that step back to analyze the passage. Often when I try to analyze a passage all of the terms get into a confusing jumbled mess. This passage is suggesting that you need to take a step back from the passage and pause in the center to analyze. I often read the whole passage first and do not take time to think about it and often times when I go back to think about the passage I forget some of the finer details.

"The Black Walnut Tree" By: Mary Oliver
I can associate with the author because my yard is full of black Walnut trees. I just assumed almost every one had at least one nut tree either walnut or pecan or chestnut but I guess not. My dad often debates about cutting them down but they are good shade, and keep the excessive amount of squirrels out of our chicken feed. When I was little my best friend and neighbor picked up more than three shopping carts full. We put them in a giant bag to take to my grandma for whatever she could think of to make out o all those nuts. They are good shade up until the fall when the nuts start falling then look out, because most of the nuts are the size of a golf ball to about the size of a baseball. It is also funny when the outer shell starts rotting because that is where the black color comes from. and it is more of a yellowish brown if you accidentally step on one barefoot or your dog rolls in them.

Blog#3 Meal as Communion
One of the most memorable meals as communion I can remember is Christmas dinner at my grandparents house. It is pretty much the same every year but it is the only time that the whole family is together at one time. No one would eat breakfast because at lunch we would have breakfast and lunch together and that way no one would have to cook for a few days because of all of the left overs. So after the horrendous meal was cooked fit for a king, and there was no place to sit around the table my uncle would say the blessing. He is a pastor and as far as I know has always blessed the family table. After that everyone would get a plate of food, and going around the table was alot like a church dinner because you had to wait in line except we are not formal. It is ok to reach over someone else to get your biscuit because the table was round and to say the least it is like being in a hot sardine can. So after I conquered the table getting may favorite Christmas food; turkey gravy and a biscuit I headed to the couch with my cousins and my grandpa to eat and talk. We talk across the room and have our ow. side conversations but we do not get too loud everything comes up from politics, to cows, to school, to health, you name it we have probably talked about it. After we ate we continue talking and open gifts.

Blog#2 "PoisonWood Bible" Should families stick together no matter what?
"Should families stick together no matter what?" this question is alot different now that it was in this book's time period setting and that marriage and divorce has fallen along way since then. Now people are getting divorced every day and there are very few who look at it from both monetary and a religious point of view anymore. In the time period of this book people especially in the south eastern part of the United States were very religious and most were living in suburbs and had credit alot like what we do today. However that being said divorce or even split families was both shunned upon religiously as well as the fact that at the time the father was usually the head of the household and the only one working.(note also this was before the women's rights movement) Some families should make an effort and some should not.
In the book the wife and children wanted to get away from the father because he was abusive and one child was deathly sick ,however they lacked the resources because he made all the money. They were also terrified of him because he was abusive due to a war injury and maybe PTSD.In this situation the family should not stay together because one parent is abusive and completely ignores a sick child. Although like every family if they just had an argument every now and then they should stick together.

Blog#1 "Introduction to poetry" by Billy Collins
"I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide", this is the lines I most identify with in the poem as how to understand poetry. Authors use a rainbow of literary elements and write poetry for many different reasons .These lines are suggesting that you need to examine the poem carefully and think more into the meaning that just what is on the surface but not necessarily nit pick every word and scrutinize every line.
