(SPOILER ALERT: do not read if you don't want to know the details of the movie)
When I think of a self-Knowledge movie I think of the first movie in the Jason Bourne Series. (The book is so detailed and different than the movie). Jason Bourne is on a quest to find his identity after being pulled from the ocean with long term amnesia. He is essentially "the knight" since he is a failed black-opps government experiment the "bad guys" is crooked government agents and politicians trying to cover up the incident. The Grail is his Identity, he eventually goes to a bank in Switzerland where he finds passports that have both the names John Michael Kane and Jason Bourne on them so he has to figure out which one is what. The Damsel in distress is Maurie he meets her after the bank incident and pays her 20000 euros to drive him to paris. They go to his apartment and when they get there there is a hit-man with her picture because she used to work as a lower level person on the Black Briar project which is the project that Bourne was Trained through. Bourne Doesn't find what he is looking for but he finds the files on the Black Briar project and exposes the conspiracy and lives happily ever after with Mauire (unexpected and unintended by him) while the politicians turn on eachother.
