"Should families stick together no matter what?" this question is alot different now that it was in this book's time period setting and that marriage and divorce has fallen along way since then. Now people are getting divorced every day and there are very few who look at it from both monetary and a religious point of view anymore. In the time period of this book people especially in the south eastern part of the United States were very religious and most were living in suburbs and had credit alot like what we do today. However that being said divorce or even split families was both shunned upon religiously as well as the fact that at the time the father was usually the head of the household and the only one working.(note also this was before the women's rights movement) Some families should make an effort and some should not.
In the book the wife and children wanted to get away from the father because he was abusive and one child was deathly sick ,however they lacked the resources because he made all the money. They were also terrified of him because he was abusive due to a war injury and maybe PTSD.In this situation the family should not stay together because one parent is abusive and completely ignores a sick child. Although like every family if they just had an argument every now and then they should stick together.
