"I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide", this is the lines I most identify with in the poem as how to understand poetry. Authors use a rainbow of literary elements and write poetry for many different reasons .These lines are suggesting that you need to examine the poem carefully and think more into the meaning that just what is on the surface but not necessarily nit pick every word and scrutinize every line.
